Nearly one in four Houstonians was born outside the U.S.

  • In ’21, the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) contained an estimated 1.7 million foreign-born residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This figure represents 24.1 percent of the metro population.
  • Mexico accounts for nearly two-fifths of Houston’s foreign-born residents (598,758). El Salvador (118,984) was the birthplace of the next largest group from Central America, followed by Honduras (91,650) and Guatemala (39,813).
  • One-fourth of Houston’s foreign-born residents were born in Asia (448,944). Asian nations with the largest populations in Houston include Vietnam (95,480), India (94,163), China (71,868), Philippines (35,642) and Pakistan (35,325).
