On February 2, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the "One Safe Houston Crime Reduction Initiative" that aims to address the recent surge in violent crime in the city. Get details about the initiative

Statement from the Greater Houston Partnership

“We agree with Mayor Turner that violent crime in Houston is a critical issue that demands attention, and we commend his efforts to step up law enforcement activity to prevent the situation from worsening. The core of this issue is the overwhelmed judicial system, which has a three to four-year backlog for many violent cases. Without a functional and timely court system, one that operates in cooperation with a sensible bail structure for violent crimes, those who commit these crimes will continue to act with impunity. As the Mayor made clear today, it is critical that we invest resources to clear out this backlog in felony cases and restore safety in our community and give law enforcement the support they need.”
