Fall in Houston

Following the recent announcement of Lummus' new partnership with Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corp. to pioneer advanced carbon capture solutions, the Partnership had a chance to sit down with Lummus' Ajay Gami, Chief Corporate Development Officer, and Matthew Braud, Head of Global Marketing and Communications. They discussed the company's recent partnerships and how they are developing technology solutions to create a more sustainable, low-carbon future amid the growing complexity and interconnectedness of energy systems, thus supporting the regional growth and development of the greater Houston region's energy industry.

"Lummus is proud to partner with true innovators to develop and scale sustainable solutions."

According to Gami, partnerships are a fundamental tenet for Lummus, acting as the cornerstone of their business growth model. Realizing the need for different technologies to combat the challenges the world is facing with regards to climate, emissions and an overall shift to more sustainable life cycle management of everyday products, Lummus continues to partner with numerous companies to accelerate the development of their technologies for a more sustainable future.

"Lummus Technology started very small with only a handful of technologies, and we grew by entering into these partnerships and effectively leveraging them. Now, it really has become part of our business and part of our business model. With partnerships, there are a ton of benefits - we can achieve faster time to market, leverage economies of scale, enhance innovation and develop technologies that tackle some of the industry's biggest challenges."

Lummus engages with global players such as Saudi Aramco and Chevron, but the company also dedicates its efforts to serving as a launchpad for emerging startups, facilitating the scaling and deployment of their offerings.

Recently, the company announced its partnership with Resynergi, a California-based startup that is revolutionizing plastic recycling through the use of microwave technology, building on its initial foray into the field with New Hope in 2020. Recognizing the transformative potential of these innovations, Gami emphasized Lummus' commitment to fostering partnerships, nothing that while Resynergi and New Hope operate in similar spaces, their technologies cater to different categories, enabling Lummus to address plastic recycling on both industrial and niche scales, while also supporting other companies utilizing ethanol to create plastic.

In addition to recycling plastic, Lummus is also prioritizing the reduction of waste generation as part of its efforts to enable the energy industry in the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste. In 2023, Lummus acquired assets from Siemens Energy's water solutions portfolio that can be used to treat wastewater generated by various industries that would otherwise have significant impact on our water resources if discharged to the environment. In addition to waste treatment, the technology can be used to recycle the wastewater back through the process, thus reducing the fresh water demand of the facility.

"What we're trying to look at is how we can advance technologies that support the sustainability and net zero goals from the UN, our industry, our customers and society. For that, you need certain niche technologies, and a quicker, faster model to get those technologies developed is through partnerships."

Looking ahead, Lummus is now spearheading initiatives in the bio space, which is reflected in its new partnership with RWDC, a biotechnology company developing biopolymer material solutions. The partnership will help both companies rapidly expand manufacturing and global licensing of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which are not only naturally sourced, but also biodegradable, thereby reducing fossil fuels use and environmental damage caused by the improper disposal of plastic waste or landfilling.

Additionally, the company has teamed up with NET Power to provide heat transfer equipment for its near-zero emissions power generation process.

In cultivating these strategic partnerships, Lummus has benefitted greatly from its membership with the Greater Houston Partnership. For Gami, the exposure that Lummus receives and the opportunity to talk with people at all different levels has been valuable, especially following its establishment as a standalone company in 2020. According to Braud, their need to get a new brand, identity and leadership team out in the community and among Houston's business leaders was a key factor in their decision to join the Partnership. Being part of Houston's business community has opened up additional opportunities and created more potential for fostering their next partnership, Gami added.

"Houston, like Lummus, has the opportunity to lead the energy transition. Houston has the experience, the talent and the advantages to remain the Energy Capital of the World but also to really lead the energy transition. Houston has the experience in building and executing these big energy projects and infrastructure projects that have been groundbreaking in the past and will continue to be in the future."

Houston Region Scores Major Renewable Energy Projects

6/24/24
Leading the nation in both solar generation and wind capacity, it is undeniable that Texas has become the epicenter for renewable energy. As the Energy Capital of the World, Houston has been at the forefront of the state’s success, consistently winning bids for major projects.  According to the Partnership’s Houston Facts report, the region’s renewable energy industry accounted for nearly 13,000 jobs in 2022. To bolster growth in this sector and enhance Houston’s leadership in the global energy transition, the Greater Houston Partnership is actively working to attract renewable energy companies to the region, facilitating relocation and expansion projects. According to a Partnership analysis, the organization saw a 400% increase in the number of energy transition projects it won between 2018 and 2023.  The Partnership has recently assisted in several significant project wins for the region, including Renewable Parts, a wind turbine supply chain and refurbishment company. The company announced it selected Humble for the location of its new parts recirculation workshop to meet the growing demand in the North American market. The new facility is expected to create at least 18 jobs with $700,000 in capital expenditures.   "Being close to Houston was important for us as a business, as Texas has a thriving wind industry and an abundance of turbines that we have vast experience on," said Michael Forbes, Renewable Parts US President, "and Houston is widely considered the Energy Capital of the World - a great opportunity for us to find good people and collaborate with some of the many great businesses that are located there."  Renewable Parts is one of many international companies that have chosen to expand to the Houston suburbs, attracted by the ample space for large-scale facilities and the close proximity to Houston's major transportation hubs, including the Port of Houston and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.  "Renewable Parts' decision to establish their North American operations in Humble, Texas, is further testament to the Houston region's strong infrastructure, skilled workforce and unmatched industry expertise,” said Craig Rhodes, SVP Economic Development, Greater Houston Partnership. “This new facility will bolster the local economy and help drive the advancement of renewable energy in North America."  Triveni Turbines, an Indian company that manufactures, assembles and repairs rotating equipment for power generation was another major win for the Partnership last month. The company recently signed a lease for a 38,000 square feet office and manufacturing space in northwest Houston off FM 529. The facility will create 40 jobs and have the potential for further expansion in three to five years.  Additionally, Imperial Star Solar, a solar manufacturer with operations in Asia and Cambodia, will open its first U.S. manufacturing plant in Tomball at the Interchange 249 business park. According to the Houston Business Journal, the 384,500 square foot facility is expected to produce 1.5 gigawatts of solar panels annually and increase U.S. capacity to 5 gigawatts by 2025. The company also plans to strengthen the region’s manufacturing and technology workforce by partnering with local universities and colleges to offer an internship program.  Learn more about Houston’s leadership in Renewable Energy.

DNV gives greenlight to Drax's new methodology for carbon removals delivered by BECCS

6/20/24
[PRESS RELEASE] - DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has validated a new methodology for the certification of net carbon dioxide removals delivered using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). A methodology developed by renewable energy pioneers Drax and Stockholm Exergi has been validated by DNV, an organization which delivers world-renowned testing, certification and technical advisory services to the energy sector.  The methodology demonstrates compliance with ISO standards and gives buyers of carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) delivered using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) confidence in their integrity.  The methodology also supports the development of the voluntary carbon market for CDRs, which will play an important role in the scaling of such technologies and delivery of Net Zero. DNV’s endorsement of the methodology developed by Drax and Stockholm Exergi, is an important milestone, which will support and enable the deployment of BECCS, a vital climate saving technology which both companies plan to deploy.  The comprehensive methodology validated by DNV will ensure there is a rigorous approach which will provide confidence in the quality and sustainability of CDRs from BECCS – a vital technology due to its ability to deliver reliable renewable energy as well as millions of tons of carbon dioxide removals.   This technology is widely acknowledged by leading authorities on climate change as being essential to efforts to address global warming, yet up until now there has been no comprehensive set of best-practice standards for measuring, reporting and verifying carbon removals delivered by BECCS.   Setting rigorous standards that give buyers confidence in the quality and sustainability of CDRs will be essential in efforts to scale the market for high-integrity credits from BECCS.   The methodology Drax and Stockholm Exergi have developed provides a comprehensive and conservative framework with which to quantify the net carbon dioxide removals delivered. Its validation by DNV demonstrates that it complies with ISO14064:2 (International Organization for Standardization) standards.  “Technology based Carbon Dioxide Removal techniques such as BECCS have a critical role to play in the delivery of Net Zero. Drax and Stockholm Exergi have collaborated to develop a robust methodology to both quantify the volumes of Carbon Dioxide removed from the atmosphere and define safeguards to ensure the sustainability of such techniques. DNV has used a comprehensive process to validate that the methodology is aligned with ISO 14064-2, including a stakeholder engagement process to ensure that views of stakeholder groups have been considered.” - Lucy Craig, SVP of Growth, Innovation and Digitalization, Energy Systems, DNV The methodology is the most thorough to date incorporating sustainability safeguards, giving confidence to CDR buyers and investors and has been submitted into the EU’s consultation process for a carbon removal certification framework.   The validated methodology is a collaborative initiative by the two leaders in BECCS technology, spelling out a new framework for high-integrity permanent removals with guardrails to ensure sustainable use of biomass and a conservative quantification of net removals.  Drax aims to become the global leader in delivering large-scale and high-integrity carbon removals and it’s UK BECCS project secured development consent from the UK government earlier this year. “It is absolutely critical that we have credible, transparent and trustworthy standards in place if we are to scale the market for carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) and reach the volume needed to keep warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Drax is proud to be pioneering this comprehensive methodology which aims to set the standard for CDRs delivered by BECCS, and provide governments, customers and the market with the confidence needed to invest in high-integrity durable credits.” - Angela Hepworth, Commercial Director, Drax Stockholm Exergi plans to build Europe’s first large-scale facility for carbon removals using BECCS.   “With this initiative, we want to define and accelerate the development of sustainable BECCS, provide clarity to off-takers of Carbon Removal Units on the Voluntary Carbon Market and reach out to all other BECCS developers to join the initiative to drive a convergence of standards. Only if we can avoid market fragmentation and agree on a robust, sustainable standard for BECCS will market demand be unleashed and the permanent removals industry scale to the levels deemed necessary by the IPCC to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.” - Erik Rylander, Commercial Director for BECCS, Stockholm Exergi The new methodology looks to present an industry leading, principle-led approach, which can be taken on and developed further by standard setters to enable a robust and rigorous measurement of net removals.   The full methodology can be found here.   For more information, please contact:Grant Stoker, Communications Manager  E: grant.stoker@drax.com T:  318.376.3358
