As digital technology continues to evolve, Houston is reaping the benefits through several immersive experiences that exceed the field of vision. Immersive experiences draw the viewer into an alternate reality, enabling one to manipulate and interact with the surrounding environment. Using a blend of visuals, sound and technology, here are some of the immersive experiences Houston can’t stop talking about.
The Infinite is an extension of the virtual reality work Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, the largest production ever filmed in space, produced by Felix & Paul Studios in association with TIME Studios. Shot over a period of nearly three years and producing more than 200 hours of high-end virtual reality content, the four-part immersive series documents the life of eight international astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS). The artistic multisensory reproduction of the ISS allows you to experience the epic adventure of these explorers. Extended through April 3, 2022.*
Designed by Massimiliano Siccardi, the Immersive Van Gogh exhibition features the Dutch painter’s iconic art digitized into 500,000 cubic feet that engulf the visitor in moving images that highlight brushstrokes, detail, and color. The Van Gogh installation includes the Mangeurs de pommes de terre (The Potato Eaters, 1885), the Nuit étoilée (Starry Night, 1889), Les Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1888), and La Chambre à coucher (The Bedroom, 1889) reeled in over 60,600 frames of video bringing the art to life. From the renowned team bringing Van Gogh’s Immersive Experience, Frida: Immersive Dream showcases the legacy and boldness of Frida Kahlo’s artistry. Kahlo's Mexican culture inspiration and appreciation can be seen projected throughout the Lighthouse Immersive gallery. As a universal symbol of resilience and perseverance, Kahlo’s work comes to life on a grand scale unfolding the life events, influences, and obstacles that made her the unique, independent woman she was. Through April 17, 2022.*
Experience Galveston’s historic seaport with the hands-on and innovative interactive experience Ship to Shore. Recreating the reality of travel during the 19th and 20th century, Ship to Shore unearths the raw stories of challenge and survival that allows one to explore more of the island, including its wonderful history. The immersive experience also utilizes a digital membership card that personalizes each visitor’s experience providing an authentic and new story each visit.
