With nearly a quarter of its population aged 18-35, Houston is rapidly becoming a magnet for young professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs. Thanks to organizations and companies prioritizing the development of tomorrow’s leaders through innovative educational programs, the region’s workforce is well-set for the future as young professionals are eager to make their mark across diverse industries. We spoke to several local young professionals and members of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Houston Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs (HYPE) leadership development program to hear their advice of other young professionals and the resources and tools they use to navigate and excel in their careers

As a young professional, what resources or support systems do you find most valuable?

Clara VanLandingham, JLL: Two support systems that have proven invaluable to me as a young professional are the JLL Women's Business Network and HYPE. The Women's Business Network has provided me with a supportive community of like-minded women across various business lines within our office. This group has fostered a collaborative environment, encouraging cross-selling and driving the growth of both our collective group and individual businesses.

HYPE has been instrumental in connecting me with other ambitious professionals in Houston. As a Champion within HYPE, I have had the opportunity to take on leadership roles within the community. This platform has not only allowed me to expand my network but has also enabled me to contribute to the development of our local professional community.

In both networks, I have been able to establish genuine relationships with other professionals who genuinely care about my personal and career growth.

"These resources have provided me with the support, guidance, and friendship necessary to thrive as a young professional," says VanLandingham.

What advice would you give to other young professionals and entrepreneurs looking to establish themselves in the Houston market?

Carly Bylund, Frost Bank: Join professional and non-profit groups that you have an interest in. I think specifically having a young professional focused group is very beneficial to talk with like-minded people in similar stages of their career. Learning how to network and not being afraid to meet people is the best skill to learn early on.

Whether you're a young professional looking to expand your network or a budding entrepreneur seeking mentorship and support, HYPE offers developmental experiences to succeed in Houston’s workforce. Join HYPE to gain access to a diverse network of like-minded professionals, exclusive events, and invaluable resources designed to inspire the next generation of Houston business leaders.
