Peter WT Pisters

President, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Peter WT Pisters, M.D., M.H.C.M., has served as president of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, since Dec. 2017. A renowned cancer surgeon, researcher, professor and administrator, Dr. Pisters established his career at MD Anderson, serving more than 20 years as a faculty member and medical director for an expansion in metropolitan Houston. He left MD Anderson to serve as president and CEO of the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada’s largest research hospital, before returning to MD Anderson in 2017. With MD Anderson’s more than 27,000 people as his priority, Dr. Pisters has cultivated an engaged workforce, as well as championed leadership skills, continuous professional growth and a focus on well-being for employees. He has built a psychologically safe and mission-driven environment within the organization while also prioritizing external relationships with government, industry, academic and community partners to thrive in a dynamic health care landscape. His dedication is illustrated through regular recognition of his leadership and MD Anderson’s status as a preferred employer in industry and news publications, including Forbes as one of America’s best large employers, Modern Healthcare’s list of 100 most influential people in health care, Glassdoor’s list of best large places to work and Becker’s list of 61 CEO influencers to know, among others this past year.

Dr. Pisters earned his medical degree at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in Canada and did postgraduate work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. He received a master’s degree in health care management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA.
