Houston City College and Space Center Houston have launched a partnership to expand STEM education and job training across the greater Houston region.

The two groups signed a memorandum of understanding after a year of work between HCC Southwest and Space Center Houston. The effort will connect students, teachers, industry workers and local residents through programs tied to space exploration.

Planned programs include:

  • Workforce and credential pathways: Key elements from Space Center University and Accelerate Space to prepare learners for careers in the space economy
  • Experiential learning and educator development: Space-focused summer camps and AI-driven STEM training programs
  • Research, grants and alignment: Joint research initiatives, grant collaboration and coordination with the Texas Space Commission
  • Shared vision for space education: Expansion of programs that connect education, workforce development and industry needs

“This partnership brings NASA-level science and exploration into our curriculum, providing students with hands-on workshops, astronaut presentations and aerospace projects that inspire future careers in science and technology,” said HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D. “By combining HCC’s educational resources with Space Center Houston’s industry expertise, we are creating new pathways for students to reach new heights.”

Building Houston’s STEM pipeline

The agreement is focused on strengthening the region’s talent pipeline and helping more residents engage with science and technology. Houston’s role in human spaceflight gives the region a strong base for programs that link education with future STEM careers.

“Strong economies are built on strong talent pipelines, by connecting education, industry and innovation, we are strengthening the talent pipeline that drives our region’s growth,” stated Kevin Tipton, Sr. Director, Aerospace & Aviation, Greater Houston Partnership.

The signing ceremony marked the start of a new phase of work between the two groups. Through hands-on learning and career-focused programs, HCC and Space Center Houston aim to help learners across the region explore paths as scientists, engineers, technicians, teachers and innovators.

For the Houston region, the partnership adds another workforce effort tied to one of the region’s core industries. It also shows how schools and major institutions can work together to prepare local talent for future jobs.
