The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) has launched its first bus rapid transit route in Uptown Houston.
The long-awaited Silver Line runs five miles from the Northwest Transit Center near I-10 and Loop 610 south along Post Oak Boulevard and on to the Westpark/Lower Uptown Transit Center. With dedicated lanes, new signal technology and ultra-modern buses, the new line operates with the speed and efficiency of light rail at a fraction of the cost.
The Silver Line has 10 stops along the five-mile route and is just the first in what will be a series of bus rapid transit (BRT) routes across METRO’s coverage area. The transit agency’s voter approved $7.5 billion METRONext plan calls for up to 75 miles of BRT in coming years, including connections to George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The agency has dubbed its BRT operations METRORapid.
Officials believe the Silver Line will enhance transit through the busy and increasingly congested Uptown area that has experienced a surge in new residential, retail and office development in recent years. Meanwhile, Post Oak Boulevard has been completely reimagined in conjunction with the project, making the retail-lined corridor more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically pleasing with landscaping and artistic features. The $192 million Post Oak revamp was a cooperative endeavor between the Uptown Houston District, TxDOT, the City of Houston and the Houston-Galveston Area Council.
Buses on the new Silver Line arrive every 10 minutes and are completely ADA accessible with wider doorways and level boarding.
