Life Sciences & Biotechnology

From curing cancer to developing life-saving therapies, Houston’s world-class health care institutions, research labs, and innovative companies are taking on the greatest medical challenges of our generation. Home to a wealth of life sciences and biotech companies, as well as a diverse and skilled workforce, Houston's ecosystem is seeing major growth in areas like cell and gene therapy R&D and manufacturing, cancer-focused molecular diagnostics, and biologics. Leveraging our legacy as the home of the world's largest medical complex — the Texas Medical Center — Houston is a global life sciences destination.

Business Climate

As a hub for medical device manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and health research, Houston has more than 1,100 established life sciences and biotechnology companies, as well as a number of cutting-edge health care facilities and research institutions. The healthcare and life sciences industries collectively employ over 394,500 workers, making these larger than Houston’s energy sector. The region’s growth in employment, high concentration of key scientists, National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, quality and quantity of educational intuitions, and medical research and health services institutions make this one of the largest centers of medicine and related science in the world.
