Twenty–four Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the Houston region. Houston ranks third among U.S. metro areas for most Fortune 500 headquarters.
- Twenty-four companies on the 2024 Fortune 500 list are headquartered in the Houston metro area, ranking Houston third in the country behind New York (61) and Chicago (29) and ahead of Dallas-Fort Worth (22).
- The biggest movers on the Fortune 500 from ’23 to ’24 are Baker Hughes (moved to #161 from #185), Group 1 Automotive (moved to #229 from #259), Halliburton (moved to #177 from #197), and Quanta Services (moved to #192 from #244).
- Houston lost three contenders from the list this year. Coterra Energy dropped to #575 from #420, Huntsmand dropped to #555 from #433, and Marathon Oil dropped to #527 from #464.
- Houston added two companies to its Fortune 500 roster this year: Chevron which ranks #15 announced it is moving its headquarters to Houston by the end of ’24, and NOV which ranks #444 from #501 in ’23.
